Holes in shell

This evening when I went to do the normal feeding for my sons crabs and I noticed one of the crabs had what I thought was a crack. When I looked closer I noticed there was a bunch of tiny holes in the shell. They were not there the last time i saw him. The last few times I’ve went to feed the crabs or clean the tank he has been buried in the sand. Wasn’t sure what it was so I took the other crab out and I did separate them just in case.

I took everything out and checked to see if there was any mites but so far I have found nothing.

Here is the photo of his shell. He was in the moss pit prior to me taking this.

That wouldn't be caused by any kind of mites. But it is interesting. How many and what types of shells do you have for him to choose from? Is he a Purple Pincher?

Are you 100% positive this shell didn't have this damage to start? It looks like the effect of boring sponges which would have happened when the sea snail was still in the ocean.
