UVB light

Post by BG21 » Sun Dec 22, 2024 8:30 pm

Hey guys! New crabbie owner, we have had ours for 2 weeks. Im reading conflicting information, does he need a UVB light? I think he is a purple pincher? I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not..

It may be helpful to give a normal 12/12 hour light cycle. I don't think it has ever been proved though.
I love my two cool crabs Zote and Fizban.
And my cats Echo and Smudge.

A UVB light is not necessary even if you choose to do a 12/12 day night cycle. I personally don't do a 12/12 cycle but have LED lights (I have nothing against 12/12 just dont even have a consistent bedtime for myself much less the crabs lol). Though through non-scientific experiments, its been shown they prefer to be active in LED lights vs ambient lighting of the room, and UVB light above both

As stated above, there are some benefits in activity (and color) but UVB is not required for longterm health. The exception is the strawberry hermit crab, which seems to live longer with access to UVB
