Salt water
Salt water
So I use the zoo med drinking water conditioner and the salt water conditioner. Today I smelled the salt water and couldn't smell it so I dipped my finger in it and tasted it(it was fresh) and it didn't taste of salt at all. I'm making it exactly as it says. Is this normal?

Re: Salt water
That doesn't sound correct but the only way to be 100% is to check its salinity and/or buoyancy.
when i first setup my salt water tank i put a sea sponge in it to see where it would float and noticed it was wrong because it stayed floating and high up in the water. even when i pushed it under.
i hope that was kind of helpful.

Re: Salt water
It's recommended to have a marine grade salt mix. Instant ocean is the brand that I and many others use for our crabs. The zoo med brand doesn't have everything they need in it and doesn't really do any good.

Re: Salt water
As mentioned above, unfortunately the saltwater conditioner for hermit crabs does not contain all the necessary elements. Instant ocean, oceanic, Kent marine salt, are all common brands. Basically you need a saltwater for marine grade tanks. I got mine on amazon a year ago, I found a 50 gallon bag on sale for 20 bucks and it's lasted me since, I'm not even halfway through with the bag. But, they sell smaller boxes at petstores, and walmart sometimes has it. A small box should last quite sometime.
Re: Salt water
i have a bag of natural marine salt (im pretty sure..) that makes 5gal i got for 2.99.
Re: Salt water
I wouldn't know if it's safe without seeing the packaging... just make sure it's not "aquarium salt" but synthetic ocean solution.

What about regular sea salt?

Re: Salt water
No, it's has to be Marine salt designed for marine fish.

Re: Salt water
Update on this post, should I still be adding the zoomed salt water conditioner to the instant ocean dechlorinated salt water I make?

Re: Salt water
No. You use a regular dechlorinator like prime or reptisafe. I like reptisafe better. It doesn't stink and it has a dropper for smaller measurements.
