Way to climb out of water bowl?

Post by MeowzTheKat » Sat Jul 08, 2017 12:20 am

So I recently got two hermit crabs, one is large but another is still rather small. I understand that both their water bowls should be deep enough so they can submerge and was just wondering what are some good things to have in the bowls that make it easy for the crabs to be able to get out when they want to.

I personally have a pebbles stacked on top of each other for my smallest to get in. I've seen other crabbers make craft mesh bridges

Hi!
You can use plastic craft mesh (found in craft stores by the embroidery section) to make a ladder in and out of the bowls. You can use extra seashells (paint and lacquer free) to create steps. You could use glass decorative pebbles found at dollar stores or craft stores. Theres a lot of options, just be wary of two things: materials that can rot and mold (such as rope) and materials that could possibly leak chemicals into the water.

I use plastic plants from the aquarium section at the pet store. They work well.

I also use pebbles or plastic aquarium plants. Sometimes I "plant" the plants on the outside of the bowl and have the branches dip into the water for them to grab in addition to the pebbles :)

Mine have sticks in the pools to get in and out with. Salt pool also has a mangrove pod in it which is growing roots nicely at the moment. The last one shot quite a few leaves but the crabs ended up chewing them all off and it died.
