Is Kirkland's sea salt useable?
Is Kirkland's sea salt useable?
I buy bottled salt water from pet smart just for the convinience but my mom says it's too expensive and she just wants me to use the sea salt we have at home. It's a Kirkland brand that we buy from Costco and it doesn't contain iodine. Is it safe to use for my crabs saltwater, and if so, what proportions of water to salt do I use?

The bottles kind isn't the right stuff either! And sadly no, the human seasalt isn't usable.
What you want is Instant Ocean which is sold for marine fish. It's around $8 (less if on sale) for a box that makes 10 gallons. For a few crabs that will last a long time!
Regular sea salt, the stuff we eat, has been refined so that it contains mostly one mineral, which is sodium chloride. The bottled stuff is made the same way. Ocean replacement mix for saltwater fish has 70 different elements, and this is why it's so beneficial for hermits. Those minerals are hard to come by otherwise!

For freshwater you want tap water that has been treated with a proper aquarium water conditioner. You want the conditioner to take care of chlorine and chloramine ammonia and heavy metals. For saltwater you will want to use distilled water and mix in instant ocean sea salt from the pet store it should be something like half a cup per gallon. It's not a huge chore a little bit of water will last you a long time
