Getting in and out of the pools

Instead of plastic mesh, could I possibly use coco liner to have the crabs get in and out of the pools? I also have egg crate, but I'm scared that the holes are too big for my smaller crabs to reach.

You could try it, but the problem with having organic material in the water is that it can rot or release ammonia over time.
