I live by the beach and I was wondering if I could just use real ocean water in a salt water pool for my crabs instead of something like Instant Ocean

How clean is the water? I'd be worried about pollutants and bugs, IMO. Has anyone here tried it? Interesting question...

hmmm.... never thought of that. i THINK it would be ok if the water is clean. but just to make sure, ask some other people.

I live by the ocean too, but have decided not to introduce any "unknowns" with the water. Living things like plankton that might die when the water is warmed, or might "bloom" like algae, tiny parasites, etc.

That said, I DO use beach sand, but I bake it to kill any microorganisms, bugs, etc.

I've also heard there are traces of mercury in southern CA seawater. Another thing that's a bit off topic, I wanted to use sand from the local beach, but even after a thorough rinse it smelled really bad while it baked in the oven. I gave up and bought a 50-lb. bag of sand instead.

I think after all those rains that we had and knowing what people dump down their gutters (oil, chemicals...etc) it wouldn't be even thinkable to use water off the coast of California. Even off Newport Beach.

I just feel much safer with ocean water substitute. Some brands are pretty cheap and all are very safe. Much safer than the real coastal waters.

thanks for all your guys' help, i went to petco last night and bought "fake" ocean water thing, it was only 3.99 or something too. and they had hermit crabs for 3 dollars so i decided to get some of those too and they were in a really big glass cage and when the employee opened the cages door this extremely hot and humid and STINKY air flew onto me and made my friend start coughing. i saw a few dead hermit crabs inside of the thing too and told the guy that worked there, we'll call him Lloyd and his response was "yeah, i guess we should clean that"...hmmm YA THINK? It reaked of death and Lloyd was so unbelievable stoned and not helpful.

i read somewhere this guy said that he used real ocean water and just filtered it out to use it also said its the best kind to use. I guess if the ocean you live by is pretty clean it would be ok, but lot of beaches have a lot of pollutants.. just something to think about or research your own area before you decide to use the ocean water. I guess you can never go wrong by using fake ocean water either

That's awful! Poor crabs! Don't be afraid to talk to store managers,etc... about their conditions. It's amazing sometimes what a calm well-thought out complaint can do for the benefit of their animals.
