Can I use water straight from the ocean?

Post by wyntrej » Sat Jul 12, 2014 4:15 pm

My parents are in Carmel right now and they said they would bring back water straight from the ocean to put in one of the water dishes in my crabitat. But I was wondering if its safe to use ocean water or if it's best to stick with using dechlorinated water and marine salt.

Like the sand, pollution is a big factor in whether it's safe for not. Real ocean water is also full of microorganisms that will die off quickly when put into a container, and that can cause dangerous water chemistry as they start to rot. We have had members who live out in the middle of nowhere, away from pollution sources, who use real ocean water, but it does need to be collected and changed daily. :)

Okay so I probably shouldn't use it. I don't wanna risk it.

I just read this after I've been using Saltwater straight from the Sea for 7 Months.. LoL !! Well what wodesorel mentioned does makes sense though regarding the pollutants.. Best if u can get fresh ones almost daily.. I stored my saltwater in a container which sometimes I kept for 2-3 weeks before grabbing Fresh Saltwater from the Sea when I run out of it.. My Hermits does looks healthy so far all of them have molted at least once.. I just got some Marine Salt (Instant Ocean) today & just mixed some for them & will observed if they like the Mix Saltwater better or not.. Just to lazy to keep going to the beach to grab saltwater every time.. Haha =D

I wasn't sure how much Salinity am I suppose to mix.. I brought a Hydrometer where the reading that is safe for Reef Aquarium should be between 1.020-1.024 SG.. However I measure my old leftover saltwater from the Sea was at 1.027.. So I wasn't sure what should be the correct reading but I guess Hermits should be able to adjust & balance the salinity from the Fresh & Salt Water bowl.. Anyhow, I mixed mine at 1.026 SG =D
