How do you store your premixed water?

Post by moonbeam » Sat Dec 27, 2014 3:09 pm

Hey! So I've read the caresheet on water treatment and I am looking for opinions. As long as I've been crabbing, I've mixed up fresh and salt water as needed. I've always worried about bacteria growth with keeping the water at room temp so I've never premixed. We just got an extra fridge so my storage space for extra crab water is now available and I'm just wondering, how many of you premix your water? How do you store it? Likes, dislikes? Thanks in advance!

I buy 2 jugs of distilled water and use it to mix each type, then reuse it thereafter. I like to pick nicer jugs that feel strong and hard

I use untreated polland spring water to spray the tank down. Should I treat this water?

I sometimes premix water (I also like to refrigerate it for the same reason), and when I do it goes into large empty milk jugs, or whatever type of bottle I can find in the recycling. I would do it more often, but the fridge doesn't have room most of the time. It is so much more convenient when I do though, good for you that you finally have the extra fridge space :)!

@backwoodsbrit10, Poland spring is supposed to be de chlorinated, but you never know with commercial water. Also, it can get pricey purchasing bottled water, so I would suggest just treating tap water, it will cost so much less in the long run. You can get a $5 bottle of dechlorinator that will last you a lifetime.

I premix water an put it into empty water bottles, nice way to recycle :) .

The thought of putting it in the fridge never occurred to me, I leave it at room temperature in my room. I assumed they should have room temperature water, instead of cold.

I premix my salt water in a empty grape juice jug its about 36oz - I find it easier to Pre make it in the same jug for the sake of accurate measurements. It's then stored next to the tank.

Sometimes I do it with my fresh water, but that's usually done separately as I tend to run out of that more frequently.

Ditto for me. I keep the jugs at room temperature.

I mix saltwater in a clean gallon sized Gatorade bottle. What's left I have always stored at room temp out of direct light. It really doesn't sit around for long as I change water dishes every couple days. The dish in my 75g tank takes almost half a gallon, the other I'll have to measure again but I'm pretty sure it takes 2-3 cups.

I have a 5 gallon bucket of RODI water and of salt water that sits at room temperature. I keep fish in one of my pools and it hasn't died so far so I'm assuming it is fine at room temperature. Just my two cents.

Thanks guys! I think it's about time I start premixing, and since a lot of you have success storing it at room temp no point in taking up fridge space :) I think the pantry will work just fine!
