two questions reguatding salt water??

Post by pandaincognito » Sat Feb 20, 2016 9:59 am

First question is kosher salt? I was told by someone who keeps a salt water aquarium that pure, unground kosher salt can be used in place of aquarium salt. It is a lot cheaper, since I can get it out of my local dollar store for a dollar. By what I was told it doesn't have any additives, it is just salt...pure and natural...
My second question is salinity level? I've been giving them brackish salt water, because I'm scared to give them ocean like water, thinking it might be too much. Which do they need? Brackish or sea??

They need ocean water. Made with a product like "instant ocean". I don't think that kosher salt is good enough for what you need.

@purpleperson is right: using a salt water aquarium mix like Instant Ocean or Seachem Marine adds the minerals the crabs usually find in ocean water and need to be healthy. A 3lb box of Instant Ocean costs about $6 and will last quite a while as you only use 1/2 cup to make a gallon of SW.
