HCA: Hermit Crab Association

These are the dishes I currently use in my hermit crab tank.

I find the salt water one, with the water evaporating, leaves the salt behind and it can be really hard to get off.

Any suggestions in ways to clean these, or better dish suggestions?

I use doubled up Tupperware containers for both my salt and freshwater - I think most on here do the same

Are you sure that it is salt? I think that the salt would eventually corrode that kind of dish. I prefer the double Tupperware bowls also.

I use the double Tupperware method too, I was using ceramic 1.5" high pet bowls similar in dimensions to the bowls you show but was concerned my crabs couldn't submerge enough so I upgraded to a deeper bowl. Are your crabitat conditions 80F/80% relative humidity and are you changing your water every 1-2 days? I didn't have this problem with the salt evaporating when using my pet bowls. I used to boil my shells in saltwater. It was a pain to get the dried salt crystals out of my pans so I sympathize about that.

I was using that dish for fw, but I used a scrubbie. I did notice that it gets icky

I am new to the crab world and I am setting up a new crabitat for my 6 pp... I plan on putting 2 bubble pools in 1 fresh water and 1 salt water...will I need separate drinking dishes or will the just drink from the pools

They'll just drink from the pools, but you need a safe way for them to get in and out. Many folks use plastic craft mesh and zip tie it to the edge of the plastic pool so the crabs can climb up and down. There's other ways to provide a safe entry/exit too, but this one is used often.

Yeah I have a bunch of that craft mesh...I am a crafter at times lol...I was planning on using that all over the place cause I have so much...could I hang that stuff along the back wall for my crabs to crawl on even though the ultratherm heater is gonna be there

Only concern I'd have with hanging it on the back is that it not get too hot and outgass into your crabitat. This is only moderately likely, in my opinion, but I'd keep an eye on it. If you use command hooks or something, that allows it a bit of space from the wall, that might help if you have any issues...

You might put a few "footholds" into it (little open spaces where you clipped out a few strands of the craft mesh) so they can use their pincher claws to grab stuff when they climb.

Ok thanks...my husband is building me a new stand for it and is suppose to have it done by Friday and my ultratherm heater and thermostat is coming in the mail today! I have the tank all lined out with my plan and just waiting...will post some pictures when I finally get it all together!

Sounds like you have a fun tank build coming up!

Oh, and I forgot to add last night, look into a modified hamster wheel. That is actually one of the greatest things to do with craft mesh, imo. Crabs LOVE them!
