pool ideas
so, from what I've read the silicone Plexiglas pools haven't lasted long for many. They look so cool, but in the long run the silicone fails and the tank floods. Has anyone tried a type of waterfall for their fresh water pool? Did it last? How did you do it?
Also, does anyone have any type of filtration going on in their pools? My boyfriend has aquariums so we have filters galore around our house. Could i implement that idea into a pool? Could i do it for both salt and fresh, or just fresh? What's y'all's thoughts on all of this?
I have PPs, do they even use these fancy pools? Lol
edited to add:
Does the width of the pool matter? I've checked out the archives and saw some pretty awesome tanks, but their pools were small. They were super deep, but the diameters were small. So, it can be a narrow, deeper pool and that's still okay? (as long as the crabs can fit of course)

pool ideas
Hello!
We don’t really recommend doing divided pools, because they can become weak over time, and yes they may flood. I don’t believe that it is necessary to have a filtration system on your pools, too much flor may scare the hermits. I like to keep air stones in my pools for some circulation.
I believe that CrabberCuber has filtration in his pools.
The pools can be any width or length, as long as the crabs can submerge completely underwater, and if they can fit into the pool.
Here’s a picture of my pools when I first got them.

They are 11x6x3 and were too small for me, so I have bought new ones, just haven’t installed them yet.

I also wanted to mention, that you can do a waterfall, which would be run by an aquarium pump. You can do that, but there may be a risk the crabs can reach the pump, or it becomes clogged, so keep that in mind.
I haven’t used pumps for that reason.

Re: pool ideas
If you are familiar with the nitrogen cycle you can implement filters into pools and may be able to go longer between water changes. With larger pools it can definitely be a benefit. You would test and cycle it like an aquarium. I was considering it for awhile, but for me it's just easier to change it since my pools are not of considerable size. I have seen people implement waterfalls, but I think it would pose problems after time due to sand and coco fiber build up causing the internals to become clogged. I also worry that it is hard to know what material the waterfall is made out of internally, and if said item were a type of metal hermits are sensitive to it could possibly contaminate the water. That being said, I think I have seem people use fountains, I just don't know how it turned out long term.

Re: pool ideas
I would love to have filtered pools, but that's not an option right now.
It's really a great thing, so long as you choose the correct filters, and they are of appropriate size.

Re: pool ideas
Yeah, I didn't think about the sand and such getting in and clogging the filter system up. Thanks!
The waterfall would be super cool but honestly after watching a few more videos it would be too much trouble for water changes. Not saying they're not worth the trouble, but with as many animals as we have and our work schedules, it would take too much time. Doubled up plastic bowls are the best way to go, I'll just shop around and find some that I think fit better and give some more depth than what I currently have.
Just want to say that without y'all, I'd be lost! I see all this extra crazy cool stuff online that hooks me in and id end up running through all those ideas before realizing they don't work or would take too much time. Y'all really reel me back into perspective and give past experience and it helps so much!!!! Thank yall!!!!

I totally get work schedules, I'm off school this month, but I'm a full time student alongside working nights full time. For me, whatever is convenient is best. haha I do dream of a massive custom built tank one day with deep, fully cycled pools, but now is just not the time financially or timewise.

Re: pool ideas
I went to dollar tree last night and found a nice bin for a second layer. Going to cut a door, and add little ropes inside from the top to make like a little climb course in their hide. Then wrap the outside in burlap because it's a slick white bin. It fits PERFECTLY at the end of the tank, and only a dollar! ![](http://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji108.png)

I also found two deep round bowls to use for pools. I'm going to glue the rocks inside them today with aquarium silicone. It's flooding in lake Charles so no errands or outside chores today! More time for crabs![](http://emoji.tapatalk-cdn.com/emoji16.png)

Oh, and I bought little plastic containers to store food in. The baby jars were nice but too difficult to open and narrow openings. These are plastic and perfect size!

Re: pool ideas
Alright, so here's what I came up with and I would like to test out this weekend. The tank isn't set up, but I'm going to use some water bowls and an old pump we have to see how it works.
So, we have a filter similar to this for our betta tank that's currently not in use. It uses charcoal filter cartridges. It sucks water in from the bottom, pulls it up thru the cartridge, and pours it out at the top. The idea was to mount it to the side of the tank just high enough that the bottom sits in the water bowl. Then I'll wrap the cord up the side of the tank and wrap it really well so even if it gets pinched, nobody gets electrocuted. But with the amount of substrate I'm putting, and the water bowl height and the filter height (cause the cord comes out the top) it most likely will barely have any cord, if any, in the tank.
This would be for the fresh water pool. The salt water pool would have a bubbler, because I don't want the salt to clog.
Anyways, here's the question in all this. Would I even need the charcoal filters? I just want the water moving but I like the slight waterfall effect this gives, even if it isn't too pretty. Lol.
Most likely this won't work and will be a hassle and I'll change my mind. But I wanted to share the idea with y'all anyway! In case someone else has tried it![Image](//uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180624/62df06dc65c8e8b53712df0842eb4a09.jpg)

Re: pool ideas
I had a pet fountain in my crab tank for a few months, but they tracked so much sand and debris in that it burned the pump out. It is really hard to use a filter in a crab tank - even a few pieces of sand can trash the propeller unit and either kill it completely or make it grind so badly you won't want to use it. I had even protected the input with layers of foam!
And no, you do not need carbon. After about a week the carbon stops purifying anyway! However, with no filter media inside, you're looking at just a pool of water that is moving and it still needs to be changed out regularly. If you want something more like a fish tank where it is self-cleaning, you need to use foam or floss and allow the filter to grow good bacteria that will eat any ammonia from decaying organic debris. It can take weeks or months for the bacteria to grow enough!

I read in another thread that purple pinchers don't really even use the pools ad much, so id be wasting my time doing anything fancy. I'll just stick with regular bowls with bubbler!

Re: pool ideas
Filters are only a good choice if they are cleaned out very regularly, and if the pools are large enough to need one.
It’s true that PP’s won’t stay underwater very long, mine won’t go under at all, and my E’s will submerge completely.
IMMSMR, JediMasterThrash has pumps in his setup, but take note that he has a large amount of crabs and space for that.
