Quick Question about Prime

This is going to seem silly... I just got my little bottle of Prime from Amazon and it says "two drops per gallon" but those drops.........they seem so tiny!

is it really just two of those tiny drops?

A little bit of Prime goes a long way. One capful of Prime treats 50 gals. I use the recommended 2-3 drops/gal and that's always worked well.

We typically use a lot more Prime than we need to. The actual amount you need to detox chlorine or chloramine would be based on the amount of those disinfectants in your water supply. You can get a feel for that based on your supplier's water report, but what is it really reading at your tap? Who knows. Since I don't know how to administer anything less than a drop, a drop it is for each of my 1 quart hermie pools.

For decades of fish keeping, I've added ~2-4 drops per 5 gal pail of tap water for my aquariums. For my 75gal tanks where I do ~80% weekly water changes, I use Seachem Safe, which is the granular, way more concentrated version of Prime.

I have half heartedly looked for strips or something to gauge chlorine content, just to make myself feel better.

I had a bearded dragon many years ago and thought I was doing everything correctly but for an unknown reason (at least to me) he passed after a little over a year. I’m completely terrified of that happening again with Eugene. So I’m obsessing over every little thing.

I use a test kit and strips for my aquarium water. The test kit doesn't measure chlorine, but the strips do. I get them on Amazon:

Be wary of safe, it doesn't neutralise heavy metals (and maybe nitrogenous based compounds, I can't remember) like prime does.

All these years and I never noticed that about Seachem Safe. You made me go read the jar! All it says on the bottle is it "removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia" and "detoxifies nitrite and nitrate". The 75gal tank I use it in houses an oscar and a green severum that I've had for 10yrs, although I wouldn't know if I had heavy metals to detoxify or not in my tap water. I also use it in one of my planted community 55's. My other tanks and my hermies use Prime.
