The Sounds of Molting

What are your experiences with molting sounds?

I'm hearing crackling and croaking among other things. Still not sure whether 3 new PPs are down for the full molt, yet, but they are down without coming up for 3 and 6 days so far.

Are they new? Could be exploring & de-stressing.

I've never heard mine, but do say they can hear the crabs while they are underground.

I've heard mine before and not been able to see them. Nothing alarming sounding though, and I'm not sure if they are molting.

I think I've heard chirping from underground, but it's hard to say because there was one crab up at the time. There were two sounds going on: one was an insanely loud cricket chirp, like THE biggest cricket ever... it was driving the house crazy... we could hear it on every floor. This seemed to come from the above-ground crab, Harry... the second was a much quieter sound, with a very different quality, not really like a cricket. It was faint, and you had to be right at the tank to hear it.

When I found Harry in the moss pit, he stopped the mad cricket noise. But there was shortly after the softer chirp, and it didn't seem that Harry had moved. It seemed like a call and response... but I'll never know.

Hi, I am completely new to hermit crabs. I have two small ones, and one just a little smaller than golf ball size. I have had them for two weeks, and I want to move them into a 15 gallon tank. The larger crab has buried himself, but because he still digs around down there and I can hear him make sound, a lot of sound actually, I was wondering if he would do that if he was molting. From reading these posts, I got the impression that he can be making sounds even though he is molting. But can he also dig around and be molting? He seems to move quite a bit. He had no sand where he came from, and no humidity in the wire cage either. The little folder I got, and the lady at the store, gave me wrong information about care, but I found this association online and got a 10 gallon tank set up, following advise I have seen here. Now I want to move them into the bigger tank, but I am afraid to move the buried one...

Welcome to HCA! I personally haven't heard mine making noises underground other than scraping glass sound. You have newbies so it sounds like your guys are destressing. 3 in a 10 gal is overcrowded. You want a min of 1 crab per 5 gal. Moving to a 15 gal is good but no more than 3 crabs in it. Also NEVER dig up a crab unless it's an emergency such as flood... Once new tank is setup and stable, transfer ones that are up and wait for the other to come up. Then transfer him as well.

I will move him over when he decides to come up, and just have two tanks for a while. I don't plan on ever having more than three crabs, but I will of course get a bigger tank when the crabs get bigger. I also have little "shelves" with moss that they like to climb up in, so I am getting the most out of the space they have.

Welcome to the HCA! I agree with what Daws said! They can make noise anytime! if at anytime it is loud, then I would check it out. Mine are vocal on occasion but whenever I look, nothing is going on.
