Hello I have a big hermit crab that is molting for the pass 2 week, I’m expecting him to be down for a good 2 month since he is real big (1.5 inch opening).
By digging itself under I do feel that the sand is real brittle next to the big log in the crabitat.
My other small dude is now alone and always hiding.
My questions in that context is:
Can I get 3 new crab right now? Or should I wait for the big guys to come back up?
Is there any danger of the new crab disturbing the big guys under?
Thanks in advance

Re: Can i get new crabs if big guys is under
Hello
A few questions: How big is your tank? How deep is your substrate? Substrate should be a minimum of 6" or three times the height of the crab (whichever is deeper wins). As long as you are not overcrowding - then it is safe to get another crab. You would dip the crab into the freshwater of the crabitat before adding it to the tank. Also, please do be careful to not overcrowd when crabs dig down. I know the tank can become really boring during this time frame...we call this pet sand.
I personally recommend any crab up to medium size a minimum of 5 gallons each. IMO large crabs should have a 10 gallon minimium each. Jumbo and above should have a 75 gallon tank, and about 20 gallon of that each. To each his own though.

Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
