I have three crabs and two are down, molting. The Smallest one molted first and I put a pop bottle around it with the top open and then the medium one molted couple days later. The second one was partially above ground but her exoskeloton was underneath her. Now both of them have bottles around them, to protect them from my extra large PP, Riptide. When i put the bottles around them they didnt have tunnles around them. So will they die from Suffocation if they don't have tunnels?
Also do they shrink when molting?
Is it ok to lift the bottles off to do a sniff check?

Re: Suffocation?
Crabs should make a tunnel down under the sub and then make a little cave to molt in. They often move around once they are under the sub.
Just to clarify - did the first one molt on the surface? And the second was partially buried, so you can see part of the crab? Otherwise I am wondering how you knew where to put the pop bottles?
What kind and how deep is your sub?

Marina (the first one and smallest) was under some cholla wood that was half way underground. I was rearanging things, because every night the three of them like to destroy every thing (though i'm pretty sure its just my XL Riptide). Caspian (the second one and medium) i moved the little crab hut and her shell was showing.curlysister wrote:Crabs should make a tunnel down under the sub and then make a little cave to molt in. I'm so excited. Marina just came up tonight. When I first got her Marina was in a painted shell she switch immeadeatly when I got her home. She hasn't switched shells since.
My substrate is about half way up the tank of about 70% eco earth and 30% playsand

Re: Suffocation?
Crabs backfill the tunnel when they molt for privacy and security, so you wouldn't find one!
