Big holes in sub

Post by Jen.miller » Mon Jun 08, 2020 4:26 pm

Hey all! I'm back again for another episode of 'Jen has a dumb question'!

Today's dumb question is this: there are 3 big, open holes in my 40 gallon tank.

Do these happen when they come up? I've never noticed open holes when they dig in. They seem to close them up behind themselves.

Next dumb question- do I leave it alone? Or smooth it out?Image

They’re not dumb questions ;)

Yes, those holes appear when the crabs resurface. They push substrate behind them when they dig, which is why their entry holes tend to fill in better.

As for what to do with them, that’s a personal preference. I usually just leave them since they’ll even out on their own, anyways.

I usually leave them too. Sometimes a decoration, dish, or cuttlebone starts disappearing in the hole. I will rescue it if that happens though before it gets completely lost lol.

Perfect, thanks! I'll probably fill the hole under the bonzai so it doesn't take a tumble with crabs on it lol

I would want to smooth out the holes for aesthetic reasons (and I like tracking overnight movements), but I'm afraid of messing up their tunnels!
