Small Crab been molting for months
Hello, I have a small crab that's been molting now since around April. I've seen him come up once during that time but he went back down under the water bowl. Unfortunately his tunnel flooded, and I had to move him out of the old tank into the new main tank because I couldn't regulate the old ones heat. So I put him in a container with sand that blocked light and poked some holes in the top and stuck it in the main tank so he could finish his molt. However even since before I moved him into the container he hasnt moved. He has just been limp and curled up in his shell I didn't think anything of it the first couple days but it has been over a month now and he hasnt changed positions at all. I assumed maybe he was dead but he doesnt smell at all and there's no kind of discharge or anything. He does feel kind of loose in his shell like if I shake him he'll fall out. I don't know whether he's dead or if this is normal molting behaviour, this is my first molt with him and i'm rlly not sure how to find out. If you have any kind of advice on how I can find out if he's alright I'd rlly appreciate it

Re: Small Crab been molting for months
During a molt, a crab sheds their exoskeleton and eats it while the new exo hardens up. They don't come up until they are done, so he hasn't been molting since April. Crabs dig down to de-stress or just for fun, as well as molting.
While there may be times when they don't move much during their molting, it does sound like your crab may have passed away. Did he shed his exo while he was underground, like did you find any of it with him? Has he shed it while in the container?

No I havent found any part of an exoskeleton, and he hasnt shed it in the container. I just assumed because he had been under for so long without coming up he was molting and because there was no smell or anythingcurlysister wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 10:39 pmDuring a molt, a crab sheds their exoskeleton and eats it while the new exo hardens up. He might have molted while he was under, then come up again. Or he may have just been preparing to molt when you dug him up, or you missed his exo in with him, or he wasn't molting. But if he has not shed his exo in the month that he has been isolated, and he has not moved, it sounds like he may have passed away. Can you post a photo of him?

These are really bad pictures but this is really all I could get of him without moving him. But I think you might be right he doesn't move at all and he looks kind of a greenish colour, but there's no odour which is odd.curlysister wrote: ↑Sun Jul 31, 2022 11:45 pmHe might have molted while he was under, then come up again. Also apologies he's really sandy from when he was buried, and for the painted shell he's a fairly new crab and that's the one he came in.
And apologies for replying so late my friend
