Crab emerged from molt without small pincher!!

Post by sophie_rice » Sat Jun 21, 2025 8:34 pm

Hi!! My 3 year old hermit crab, Hubert, just finished molting! It was her second molt, yay!!!! I was lucky enough to be there when she emerged, watching her crawl out of the sand :)
Unfortunately, shortly after when she went for her food bowls I noticed that she was missing her smaller pincher. I don’t know what went wrong; I believe she was safe and unbothered during her molt and my substrate is 6 1/2 deep, my temp is 70-80 all the time, and she got all the proper nutrients and water before her molt. I did a lot of research and apparently she can live fine without it, but I’m worried. She was eating great, and is currently drinking water and saying hello to her friend, so I know she can eat and drink without it. Is there anything I need to do to ensure she will be safe and comfortable? Thank you 😊

Sometimes there is no explanation, things just go wrong. There isn't really anything to do for her now, or that you did to cause it. You are correct that she will do just fine without it! And hopefully next time she goes down to molt, she will come back up with a new pincher!
Some people might say to keep your temp closer to 80 if you can - anything over 72 is safe for PPs.

Hi, thanks so much!
Yeah, I have a heater so the temp never really goes under 72, but typically in the winter it’s around 75 and in the summer it’s around 78. I try to keep it as close to 80 as possible.
