what should I do???

Post by Freedomwolf » Mon Dec 22, 2014 3:43 pm

Hi I am back again and I am sorry I haven't been on for a while (I just had knee surgery and am looking to get bariatric surgery (set up for one of the many types) this 30th). I have a major question. My little Ecuadorian JUST molted and has white spots where their eyes are. Is this a form of shell rot??? Please answer soon so I know how to care for them (if you are willing to answer and not have my head for those of you that remember me and are/are not angry with me)!!! Thank you!!!

Hi again! Hope you feel better soon. That is so much to go through at once!

When you say "JUST molted", how long ago are we talking? Is he hardened up? What this a normal molt? Is there any sign of eye structure, or is it only the stalks that are left?

Thank you VERY MUCH (AND for letting me keep my head)! I am looking forward to these big changes that are coming though one of them may not be so good (just pray that I get a Christmas Miracle(s) LITTERALLY and the hermies don't have to suffer the cold ).

There does seem to be eye structure just a HUGE white spot on the eye leaving only the tip and the other side (if you were to shake the pincher in greeting fashion, it would be the left) may have had just a little round stub. They weren't up just yet an just as in my guesstamate would be a 3=4 days at minimum ago they were just hiding. They are tiny the one I have is no more than tail to claw an inch more like a half. The other one seems more on the shy end so I can't tell with him, but if this is contagious, than he may have it as well. I pray not though. That's all I really know the rest of my teency one the body and all seems fine.

For your sake and theirs I hope it's a warm Christmas!

Without photos it's hard to say for sure, but it sounds like a molt gone wrong. Every so often parts of their exo can get stuck, and this tends to be at the tips of things - eyes, claws, legs. I think it was wolfnipplechips who first called it "rasin eye", but in adult PPs the damaged areas turn brown and shrivels. In a younger E that is probably still blue it would be more likely to be white instead of dark. I've had a few larger hermits come up from molts with eye issues, but it doesn't seem to be contagious, and with luck they can molt those damaged areas back to normal although it takes a while since the eyes are harder for them to regenerate then other parts of their bodies.

AWESOME THANKS!!!! I did not know their shell could get stuck! I am glad it is not contagious or anything just a bad molt. Is it years that it takes for them to regenerate their eyes?

Also thanks for hoping that it is warm, though I am afraid that it is going to be MUCH more than just the heat we loose.

It took my PP, Favre, several molts to get his eye almost back to normal. In the end it stayed slightly smaller than the other. Got him in July 2008 and the damage happened in his first molt with me. He passed away sometime in the beginning of this year (completely unrelated to the eye injury) and at that time it was still slightly smaller - but had been that size for quite some time....I think since around 2010.

Edit: In this thread I say 5+ molts. I think I had lost track of how many. viewtopic.php?t=75851

AWWW.... I bet he was still cute though his eye was smaller (I am sorry to hear that). I am sorry he passed away too, ESPECIALLY earlier this year (gives shoulder). Don't worry he will be waiting on the other side of the rainbow bridge for you when you get there. Thank you for the comfort of letting me know that that is all it was and that he will get his eye back even if it does take a few tries.
