How long do they molt for? He doesn't smell.

Post by springfairy556 » Fri Jul 03, 2015 9:09 pm

My little crab, Pumpkin became inactive. One day I lifted the hut to check to see what's up and he was out of his shell, and his shell was next to him.I assumed he was molting, so I left him be.Its been 2 1/2 weeks now and he's still in that position.I'm starting to wonder if maybe he is dead, but every crab that I had that died, smelled really bad like rotten fish.He isn't giving off odor at all.

I never had a crab molt this long, my other crab Henry just molted last week and he came back active just last night.

It's not normal for a hermit crab to leave his shell to molt unless something is wrong. It's also very important for him to be in a shell so that he doesn't dry out. However if he's molting getting him into a shell could be dangerous to him.
Is there any exo laying near him? Has he moved at all in the past weeks? If he's molting he probably should have started shedding by now.
Is he a newer crab? Could you fill this template out so we can see what your tank is like?
1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it?

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read?

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what?

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)?

5. What kinds of food do you feed and how often is it replaced?

6. How long have you had the crab and what species is it, if known?

7. Has your crab molted, and how long ago did it happen?

8. What type of housing are the crabs kept in, what size is it and what kind of lid is on the housing?

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they?

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any?

11. Have there been any fumes or chemicals near the crabitat recently?

12. How often do you clean the tank and how?

13. Are sponges used in the water dish? If so, how are they cleaned?

14. Has anything new been added to your crabitat recently?
If he's a newer crab he could be facing a lot of stress from being shipped to the pet store from the wild. This isn't normal, hopefully he's okay and we can help you out :)
