I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
Re: I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
I knew it. Felix will be up soon too, I'm sure of it my family and I especially me have been reading lots of your posts b4 I even joined HCA. They do love to scare us, amazing little, sometimes big creatures they are. One of my favorite things about are crabbies is they are very smart. The thing I dislike is the anxiety we put our selves through. When I haven't seen a crab for two days, let alone a molt months long I freak out. You handled yourself wonderfully. If only they knew how freaked out we get ,or maybe they do. Sending crabby love to Felix who I'm sure you will see soon.
Re: I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
Felix came up last night so they're all safe and my nose was wrong! Around 6:00 yesterday evening, I saw a bit of movement in the narrow gap between the two pools and realized it was Felix's pale skinny leg reaching up through the substrate. Of course, the gap is too small for a medium-sized crab to squeeze through but he kept trying and wouldn't let me help him. "Be that way" I said and assumed he'd tunnel out under one of the pools over night. This morning he was still half-heartedly trying that gap so I removed the water-filled container from the FW pool, pushed the embedded bottom container aside about a 1/2", reached down, plucked Felix up (he'd slammed into his shell at the sight of my fingers), wriggled him through the widened gap and popped him up on the substrate. Silly crab!
Felix up

Pale as ever! He's so pale that his setae are a light golden blond.

Re: I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
So glad to hear your nose was wrong. They must have stashed some stinky food somewhere.
It's neat how Felix stays pale. Sometimes diet affects color, but sometimes it's just the crab and no amount of "color-enhancing" food will change it. Sounds like Felix is just special.![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/003.gif)

Re: I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
Oh, Felix is "special" all right: as soon as he peeked out of his shell after I put him on the substrate, he saw poor little Charles Paris, often the victim of Felix's harassment, and charged right at him! Charles Paris was backing up as fast as he could and managed to pull himself up a strand of ivy before Felix reached him. Not up from a molt for more than a minute before he started reasserting his "King of the Tank" status. Oh, yeah, he's specialCallaLily wrote:It's neat how Felix stays pale. Yes, they love to freak us out. It's probably a long forgotten piece of food. Felix will be back up before you know it, I'm sure of it! They are like real strong and hardy in some ways ( of course those are the ways we think that they are not) and not so tough In other ways. I just can't get over how people go on vacation every year and have no idea how to take care of it and the poor thing dies, my sons aunt does that she's the one who went and bought my son his first. You should of seen this poor guys cage and how she told me to take care of Herman. The sickest part is she told me that her son and her actually watch one molt in the dark one time. I believe it to be true because when we got herman he had only maybe 1/2 inch of bone dry poop infested blue sand.
Re: I Hope it My Nose is Wrong But...
Sorry, that last post wasn't an emergency. My teeny crab in the two liter isn't giving off a bad smell, I spray around her every night and most inside the bottle a liter. Hoe long van a crab go on molting without a shell? I guess only time will tell the other teenies I got the same day except for one( baby Jeffrey's is his name) all have been under since two days after I brought them home. I hope they also ok, that's been 3weeks at least is there more of a chance they are molting or just still distressing. I'm worried because they (the crabs don't seem to come out as much as they have in the past, but I think that could definitely be my imagination). I'm just happy now that they have definitely excepted baby Jeffrey into the family he was in between my two biggest in their sacred critter tube. Thanks! For all you guys do. Without this site and all of the crab caretakers' and crab lovers sharing your knowledge and experience's it's quite possible that the crabs we have would have a lower quality of life. I didn't mean to post this here,it's not a asap emergency

Sorry to go off the main topic of this thread. Mods please move if needed.
How long has this crab been shell-less? They do not leave their shell to molt. Streaking, as it's called, is a huge sign something is wrong. Either with the crab, the shell, and/or conditions. It's important to reshell a naked crab, even if that means gently helping them into one. They do not live long without a shell protecting them.
Depending on their size and condition, molting can take anywhere from a week to several months. They may be down longer than what's "normal" if they are under destressing first, then molt before surfacing (or are up so briefly between they're missed).

Re: I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
Its definitely got to be food, possible musty EE ?? Check that humidity gauge, I'm sure you know 99% for a few days gets musty.Crabinski wrote:Big Enzo is OK! He came up briefly last night after almost 3 months down and is enormous, based on the few quick glimpses I got of chunky tree trunk legs. Now I only have to worry if the odor is Felix or some very long-forgotten food buried deep.
***didn't realize this was a three page thread !!!
I'm glad they're okay, what's the status on the smell?

Re: I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...
The smell is gone! If it was a bit of stinky food underground, Big Enzo or Felix may have consumed it on their way upkornchaser wrote:I'm glad they're okay, what's the status on the smell?
