Re: Worried
No problem. I hope the Wyze cam gets some footage of them! I seriously need a Wyze cam... I find myself getting up at 3am to check on them, haha. Assuming you only have 2 crabs (Hermie and Flash) sometimes I find they do better in a large colony.
After Star died, I only had Pine. I got Mango from Petsmart and even then things weren't active. Now I have 4 wonderful crabby babies, and usually this is how every day/night goes:
Pine rarely ever buries but loves to explore. During the day, she likes to sleep, eat, and watch me with here cute small eyes. For the other 3, usually all of them bury every day. Mango comes up REALLY early morning (3am or so) and does her stuff. Pumpkin comes up usually at night, and I don't quite know about Blackberry yet. This is all I have observed from waking up early morning.
It depends on how big your tank is and if you feel comfortable getting more or not, and where from. Adoption is great, but pet stores are the easier option.
For the last two or so years, every year around late June-July (one of those months) there has been CrabCon. Mary Akers has been breeding and successfuly raising captive-bred hermit crabs which she does sell.
If they do have Crabcon next year, I'm definitely going to purchase one. Keep in mind it's about 70-80$ for a single crab w/ shipping included (this is what the price was this year.) It could change, but captive bred babies are reallly cool!
It's up to you though, just giving recommendations. I hope Flash gets better soon, keep me updated!

Re: Worried
Correct, just the 2 of them for now. I will more than likely add more crabbies in the future...just going to start with keeping these 2 alive and happy first, lol. I laugh, but I’m so serious...especially after losing my 2 little ones back to back. Ideally I’d love to have around 5 of them in a HUGE tank with lots to climb on! Sounds like you’ve got a great little crab familyPumpkincrab wrote:No problem. I hope the Wyze cam gets some footage of them! I seriously need a Wyze cam... It was held in New York, but apparently being held in St. Louis, MO 2021. This year it was virtual- the captive-bred babies were available for shipping (overnight shipping.)

Re: Worried
The little babies are precious!
At first I fed them whatever was in that bottle from the beach shop...until I read better. They currently have grapes, apples, unsweetened coconut, boiled egg shells and oats. I give them natural peanut butter, banana, coconut oil and honey too. Also, I keep a calcium tablet in the tank and they like it, little pincher marks everywhere on it! Got to see Flash and Hermie playing tug of war with it when Flash first came home and was active. Here’s a picture...

That's very awesome! So cute. I feed my crabs that also but also feed them mixes from Etsy which they love. If you're interested here is the link.

Re: Worried
Worried still...
It doesn’t look like either one of them came out last night. I had my camera set to record when it detected motion, but nothing recorded and it doesn’t look like any of the food was touched and all the new shells are sitting just like they were. It’s especially weird if Hermie didn’t come out bc she usually comes out to eat even before I go to bed and last night she didn’t. I’m pretty sure I have the camera set up correctly (might start a new topic to get camera advice from those who have one), so idk what to do now. At what point should I just go in there and pull Flash out to check on him? Should I put him at food and/or water bowls? The problem is that he’s hard to get to in this particular hut that they are hiding in, especially because Hermie blocks the opening and it would be very difficult for me to get to flash without also having to move Hermie out of the way. Was really hopeful to gain some insight last night, pretty bummed...and worried about my little Flash. Do you think Hermie is kinda lookin out for Flash? She doesn’t seem to want to leave. Could Flash be so dormit bc Hermie stays in his way blocking the entrance/exit? Idk

Re: Worried
I'm glad your camera is working. Sometimes my crabs don't get up all night (no idea why.) If I were you I would gently try to pick Flash up and look at him, maybe even dip him in saltwater. I hope it goes well!

Re: Worried
Foodwise, my crabs really like HermitGrub's Variety Sampler Pack 2. Her packs and bundles she sells are pretty good deals and you get a lot of food and samples for what you buy. the sampler pack 2 is mainly fruit oriented so if your crabs like more of a mix, she has other sets and bundles for that. But I DO recommend greensand which she and other sellers sell. It's packed with nutrients and my crabs love it.
I hope I'm not being annoying with all the stuff I'm telling you..!

Re: Worried
Omg, not at all...I’m so appreciative! I’ve wondered if I bug people on here with my questions so I understand where you’re coming from, but I am genuinely thankful and will take all the info I can get to give these adorable little creatures a great life! I’ve heard of that place as well as green sand, just haven’t gotten there yet. I have to space some of these things out, budget-wise with my current circumstances, but I plan on looking into both!
I still haven’t gotten Flash out yet, but I’m going to do it tonight when Miss Hermie comes out to eat and gets out of the way, lol...hopefully. She stays right in the entrance facing me with Flash buried face first behind her, making it difficult. And my tree hut/hide goes down pretty deep and would cause a mess and commotion to lift it up. I REALLY hope he’s okay
. I’ll keep you posted once I have an update. Thank you again for everything!
Question though (lol)...If he seems OK, what could be the cause of him not moving around? Just stress you think? I will definitely try him in the saltwater to see if that stimulates him some! Should I leave him in the saltwater or just dip him in a few times and put him back in the hut? I have a separate hut just for him… Should I put him in that one so he has some alone time while he’s dressed? Could Hermie be making it worse? She seems protective...or is that just the human in me, haha? Sorry if these are silly questions!

Re: Worried
They aren't silly questions at all lol! Sometimes it can be stress, sometimes not. I've been doing a lot of work on my tank lately and Pine has been quite stressed, she has not been moving very much. I am leaving her alone and she should perk up soon. Maybe Hermie is bullying him, does that seem like a possibility? Most likely just stress but you never know. I would recommend gently picking him up, examining and look him over a bit and hold him under the water for a good 10-15 seconds or more. This won't hurt him as they can stay under water for more than 20minutes at a time. Separate him and Hermie and see what happens.

Re: Worried
Also keep in mind that these things take time. It could take weeks for him to fully recover, but hopefully not that long!

Re: Worried
I will give him as long as he needs, as long as I know he will be OK! I have him in his salt water bowl now and he is mostly submerged, but he has not moved at all and he’s been in there for maybe a minute. What was interesting when I picked him up is how tightly he is tucked back in his shell… I have yet to see a hermit crab tuck so far back into their shell, but that’s where he was when I picked him up. I’m going to get him out of the saltwater and put him in his own hut just in case there’s an issue with Hermie.
Okay, so did that and he is right in the entrance of his own little hut hide. Hopefully I’ll see some action tonight on my Hermie Cam. I was happy to see him with good color at least...from what I can tell anyway. I took a pic!

And here he is now (back left corner)...

Poor lil fella, wanna help him so bad! Hopefully your little Pine gets back to her usual self soon...she’s so cute! Saw a pic of her before

Re: Worried
It's normal for hermit crabs to try to go way back in their shell. Maybe the shell is too big for him, I hope he changes soon. I really really hope he moves tonight! His coloring definitely does look very normal which is good.
