How long is too long and I have to move him!

Post by Crabhome » Mon Oct 12, 2015 8:16 am

After acquiring a medium sized crab I did research, including coming on here and provided him with the appropriate environment. It took 3 days to get the environment up and going and in the meantime he was lively and active. I intended to get him some friends but upon getting into his new environment he immediately went under to molt. It's been 6 1/2 months!!!! The tank does not smell. I keep it moist and keep fresh water and a little dried food available. Everyone thinks I am nuts tending to this "empty" tank month after month.

We will be moving out of state in a month. My intention was to put him into a smaller tank for transport. I cannot put the larger tank in my car. So, do we think he's dead? And what would you do about transporting him if he isn't?

THANKS!!!!!

I would carefully dig. 6 1/2 months for a medium crab sounds a little long.

There is still a chance he's alive - longest a crab has been down without surfacing was 8 months. If it were me, I'd dig right before the move, that gives him more time but still gives you a chance to disassemble the tank before you finish packing. I personally dig after month four, but you've really got nothing to loose by waiting and there is a still a slim chance he's okay. Ultimately it is your call! Moving is extremely stressful as it is, especially if it's a distance away.

Thank you! I think I'll wait a bit longer. My kids are going to be SO sad if he is dead :(

I have one crab down for around 8 months now. Medium size crab. No smell. 4 others have Been down a long time also. Is it possible they've been eaten by others? I don't get it.
