Molting or dead?

Post by CrabbyHermit » Mon Dec 07, 2015 6:13 pm

I was adding some new coconut fiber to an area I was sure was safe when I came across an empty shell that I thought the crab was molting. Is he dead or what should I do?

What I would guess happened, is that he may have switched shells before he went down, and you didn't notice it. Can you tell if another shell is missing? Do you know how many shells you have in the tank so you can count them? You definitely don't want a naked, buried crab, but I personally have never had a crab go naked and bury, but I have had plenty little dudes change and disappear when I wasn't looking.

No I found the shell underground. I don't think others are missing. I tried to do everything just right and so many problems!

Everyone has problems at first! That's why we're here. :)

Have you filled out the Help Template recently? It lets us old timers look over things and spot problems: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=46102

And even when things are perfect, you cannot control for what happened to them before they got into your care. Post Purchase Syndrome affects a huge amount of hermits.

Sometimes my crabs dig and then an empty shell falls in the hole.

I'm sure he's dead but should I be digging? I feel like I shouldn't.

My other little guy surprised me by surfacing today! He looks like he's molted and feeling fine!
