My first one back up!

Post by hprmom » Mon Apr 04, 2016 4:28 pm

While Herminy is a pro, having molted in captivity before he came to me, this is my first molt so I'm pretty stoked. :)

Herminy was last seen in a window that my son called "The Bat Signal" the morning of March 6:

Two weeks later his only tank mate went down, so the 10g has effectively been empty since then. Late, late night Friday April 1, I did my usual cursory glance into the 10g on my way to feed Junior in the 20g... and there was Herminy, pretty as you please in the middle of the tank! I did a double take--it was April Fool's day, after all, LOL--but yes, he was up!

Just before he went down he had begun to relax, sleeping in the open, not running away at feeding time, even coming out of his shell when I picked him up. Post-molt, he is more skittish than ever. He froze at first, then scrambled away and threw himself back down his rabbit-hole just as fast as he could.

As a result I couldn't get a good look at him to see if/how he's changed. I'm assuming he molted because he's primarily an "above ground" crab, was down for a month, and when I saw him Friday night he had devoured an entire shell dish of crushed cuttlebone! Come to think of it, his last meal before going down was also a big dish of calcium (in fact, he dragged my favorite shell dish under with him). Since coming up he's been inactive, just hunkering down in the moss pit and only coming out to eat. I assume this is normal as he is recovering/gaining strength?

I have two down in another tank right now having their first molt in captivity, thinking good thoughts!

Congrats on the successful molt. I think any molt in captivity is cause for celebration!

Molts can be so stressful. For us that is! One of my original crabs went down for a molt and I didn't see him for almost 7-8 months! And he was a small one! He had an injured eye- so I'm assuming he did back to back molts to fix it. I'm sure he probably snuck up and I just didn't see- but when I finally saw him up for a good amount of time and realized who he was I was astonished! I feel your empty tank pain- I'm trying to move my colony to a new tank. And frankly I only could move 3 out of 11 because most of them are currently down! Frustrating!!

Love that "Bat Signal" picture: perfect!

Yes, Herminy's behavior is pretty standard post-molt and so is any behavioral change: mellow crabs can become skittish until they regain their "up top" confidence.

I've had a little guy down for a about 2 and a half months now and recently found him in a window at the very bottom of the tank. Not sure how long he's been there but he's definitely been munching on old exo since there's random pieces in the window hahaha

Thanks, everyone! Now that I know how long it took Herminy to molt, I have an idea when to start looking for the others to come up. :)

Herminy has resumed his upside down patrol of the screen lid, one of his pre-molt habits, so that's a good sign, I'm pleased. He also spent some time just sitting in the shell shop. I swapped out the offerings but no change. He changed into his current tapestry turbo a couple of days before he went down and it was a hair too large for him then; now it looks a hair too small!

He's also still sucking down calcium like there's no tomorrow. Well, he sucks down crushed cuttlebone, not so much oyster shell or egg shell. Any other kinds of calcium I can offer him? I got some shrimp and snow crab at the grocery today and will break up the shells from those, too.
