Tiny crab molting in huge shell with holes in it

My smallest crab, who will normally wear a shell with 1/3" opening, for some reason moved into this huge broken-up shell that I forgotten to take out. It has 1" opening and at last 5 holes and is very thin. Before I had the chance to put some more shells in to get him to move into she went down for a molt. It has been over a week now and I haven't seen him (he usually molts for 2 weeks at a time) I'm just wondering if molting in the bad shell would hurt him.

Shells with holes in them can definitely cause issues. Depending on where the holes are they can prevent the shell from holding water and they can cause injury to the tail of the hermit crab which is soft. I recommend removing shells that have holes and crushing them to use for a calcium source.

Wow, that must be a small crab. despite how small it is, don’t get worried if it moly’s over two weeks because two weeks is very short

It's because of his size that his molts are so short.

What I'm mostly worried about is the huge opening and holes down the sides alowing sand to get in and harming him during the molt.
