Crab laying next to assumed molter?

Post by kayo1895 » Thu Dec 03, 2020 2:32 am

It has been about a month and a half since one of my crabs tucked itself behind a piece of wood and (hopefully) began to molt. Tonight I noticed that one of the other crabs was laying very closely to and basically touching the shell of the molter. I know where the molter dug is a pretty popular area for my other crabs to dig around and climb, but I am beginning to become concerned about how close they can get to the molter. Should I be worried? I did not choose to isolate the molter due to lack of supplies as well as concern that it may disturb more than help. Any suggestions?

If your molter is underground I would leave it. There’s not much you can do and unless you can see it it likely tunneled away from the entrance, anyways.

If your molter is not buried and you can see it then I would consider isolation. You don't need an extra tank, a half bottle pressed into the substrate around the crab will do.
