Adopted Neglected Crab

I adopted a neglected crab from my grandson 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately he had food mites and my daughter rinsed him with fresh water, isolated him until I was able to pick him up the next day. I put him into a separate tank, and he devoured his food for the first 2 days and then immediately went into a molt. No mites were detected once I acquired him. Does this molt seem uncommon, or is it that he was finally in a living condition that was temperature/humidity appropriate, and enough substrate to molt? Just worried about him. Any comments would be appreciated.

Usually they're well fed enough even when new that they're able and have been waiting to molt, and are just trying to find safe conditions to do so. Sounds like you gave him that chance so he took it! I find it more odd when a new addition doesn't immediately dig down, probably 95% of the crabs I've pity purchased or adopted have molted within the first week.

Glad to hear your new rescue is eating well, and the food mites seem to have gone away! I hope he has a success molt and comes up stronger, healthier, and ready to be moved into the main tank!
