Shells?

This is where you discuss shells for your hermit crabs. Not for selling/swapping shells, use Classified Ads for that.

Shells?

Post by Nachoqtpie » Thu Mar 09, 2017 12:57 pm

This may or may not have been answered, but I havent FOUND anything, so I thought I would ask.

For 1, how do you measure for new shells? Is it the ENTIRE opening? Or just the opening for the shell? (Meaning, the outermost portion, or the inside where the crabs actually are)

For 2, when you order/find new shells, how many should you offer to them? Is there a set number? 2 per crab? Rotating? Dump them all in a big pile and let them have fun?

For 3, how much bigger should I order the next ones? If I go by the inside of the shell, then both my crabs are ABOUT .5 inch, tho one does seem to have more of a D shaped, and the other round. Should I order some that are around the same size as well?

Order sizes in increments of 1/8 to 1/4 inch larger. Smaller sizes may be available in 1/8" increments but large shells usually come in the 1/4" differences.

They need 3 to 5 shells per crab, the more extra shells, the better.

Shells are covered in the care guides and the sticky in the Shell subforum.

I'll add that a shell shop is better than having them directly on the sub. It keeps the shells cleaner and keeps crabbies from burying the extras... Many of us have a big enough shell supply to rotate the shells every week or so that way the crabs think they have 'new' shell choices.
