I have had three hermit since early July and had three others when I was younger that all since passed. When I was little, two died pretty quickly from bad care and my last ended up changing to a painted shell but died to quickly for me to see the new shell. The three hermit crabs I have now never changed shells.
The shells I got them in from the pet store were not painted but not too great. Blue’s shell fit perfectly. Thunder’s shell was way too small, he can’t even go inside of his shell. He is always partially out. Ruby’s shell was way too big and she could barely move it with her.
Yesterday Ruby switched shells to a green one that was a bit smaller than her original. When I came in, she was just in and I didn’t see her do it but I saw that she just did it. I was very excited because that was my first shell switch ever and I took her out on my hand to show my grandmother and take a picture. I put her old shell into the shell pile but she kept taking it out and moving it so I left it where she put it.
Today I came in my room and I just missed Blue changing into Ruby’s old shell. He had just finished wiggling inside when I came in. Once again I was excited and put him on my hand to show my grandmother and take a picture. Like what I did for Ruby, I put his old shell on my hand too to show the difference.
I had showed her and brought him back in my room. I was watching him climb on his old shell on my hand and he switched back to his old shell while in my hand! I had never actually seen it and I didn’t expect it to happen, especially on my hand! It was amazing. Has anyone had their crab change shells while holding them?

I'm sure that was an incredible experience, although please remember that crabs stress really easy so it's best that you don't handle that too often.

Wow that would be an amazing experience. I have seen them change in there tank but never on my hand. I never hold my crabs because it is quite stressful for them but some people do it once in a while. It must have meant he was pretty comfortable to switch on your hand though
