Re: Finally! One Took My Shell.
Hypothetically speaking, if i were to open up say, an ETSY online shop. What items(Listed Below) would you like to see in the shop first? It takes a few hours to make anything, besides the shells that is, So if i can figure out what the most wanted items are i can start making them and get a timeline on when ill be able to open a shop for you guys. Below is the item designs ive made so far that im happy enough with to consider selling. Along with the mm size of the item, how long it takes to make and how i use it in my tanks. also, any suggestions on what i could make is always appreciated.
Shells take around 30mins to 2+hours to make depending on the size, and they arent perfectly smooth, Mainly because that takes Vapor Sealing and im not willing to expose my crabs to anything that had acetone or other chemicals on it. i can however include instructions on how you can finish them yourself, the picture in the main post is my hermit in a shell thats a bit rough around the edges but it seemed content with it for a while.
Small Hermit Huts take around 1.5 hours to make, i normally bury them half in a sand hill, my hermits like to use the small huts for whenever they are about to bury themselves. When they arnt using them for tunnels i normally see 2 hermits sleeping together in it. Size is in mm, im sorry,it's just how my program works (88.9mm x 45.82mm x 41.45mm)
Large Hermit Huts Take just under 4 hours to make, I have them in my tank the same way i do the smaller ones, My hermits seem to like using it to only sleep in though, most hermits in it at one time that i seen was 4, side by side. Size is in mm (130mm x 67mm x 60.65mm)
Cholla Climbing Stick takes just over 5 hours to make and is one of the hardest designs to get a successful print on. it measures around 6" x 1.5' but for the most accuracy convert the mm size below. I use mine with suction cups to make a pathway along the side of the tank to give them more room to explore, also have a few on a cured stick leading up to a shell shop. Size in mm (38.24 x 38.28 x 152.45)
Pricing for items will be based off time to print and material cost of each item. Ill try to keep everything rather inexpensive, But Electric, material, and time do cost a little bit.

Those fake chills are amazing. If you made a few designs - like Y, X and L shaped I would totally look into shipping them to aus.

Re: Finally! One Took My Shell.
Chills? Im thinking you're talking about the climbing sticks if so then im working on making a Joint connector piece for the cholla logs, so you can connect 2 together for corners and stuff like that, but getting it to print an overhang is hard enough without it having holes all through it, so it probably wont be finished anytime soon. I have to print the logs straight up and down for support, if i didnt i would of already made TXLY Shapes Im working on figuring Out Ways to still do it, but am unsure how at the moment. Thank you for your suggestion AussieJJDudeaussieJJDude wrote:Those fake chills are amazing. If you made a few designs - like Y, X and L shaped I would totally look into shipping them to aus.

Re: Finally! One Took My Shell.
Sorry meant cholla. Autocorrect. I understand that you might of looked into this but even if you have a thicker plastic with slightly smaller holes it may work. Or even just supports in the middle

Re: Finally! One Took My Shell.
Wow this is epic for some reason i never connected 3d printing with crabs but yeah this could solve so many problems for so many wild crabs. I think it would be cool if one day you dropped a pile of them on the beach and then years later go to a different beach and see your shells there. Because even if 3d printed ones aren't ideal they are better than bottle bottoms and small pieces of bamboo. I am also digging the 3d printed climbing stuff. You could make an entire tank, climbing background, bowls, food dish the entire deal out of a 3D printer and change the game of hermit crabbing and the pet trade. Personally I have been trying to remove as many plastics from my life and my crabs life as possible but i still think its beyond cool. I wonder if there is a way to use recycled plastics to make shells for crabs in the wild.

About the shells. thats what ive been wanting to do for so long, just make a surplus of 1000+ all sizes and just let them go. it would be great, hopefully if my plans work out that wont be to long in the future.
