Just depainted a shell. I used a nice sharp paring knife, boiling water, and clean kitchen sponge. Because of time spent in the kitchen dipping the shell in boiling water and quickly going back to work on it was not too hot for my hands. It was a very tedious process though. The shell underneath is quite attractive. I now plan on boiling it a little longer in dechlorinated water, before putting it back in the shell shop. Hope a crab chooses it, or all that work for nothing.

This shell was hand painted for sure. The paint just wrapped around the lip of the shell. If you can't see the end of the paint, I would quess the she was dipped in paint. I might just toss that one to be safe. I am a new crabber though, so ask a pro.

It would be safe to assume its been dipped in paint :( I got Fred in a paired shell like that, and the wet paint (that was still wet 5 months after he died!) inside the shell had bits of Freds butt in it, so I'm assuming thats what caused his untimely death :(

Another thing I notice when I recently got a painted shell was that it wasn't really a shell at all. so make sure to check to make sure its really a shell before boiling it.
