Post by rdug1 » Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:16 pm

HI

One of my crabs that came out of a molt about 4 weeks ago just moved in to a glass shell show in the video. I posted a video on my site glassshell.com check it out.

Very interesting. Though I would be worried about them trying to do shell modification and introducing glass splinters into the tank... but if the glass is hard enough I guess they wouldn't be able to modify it.

I would be quite surprised if they could break these.

just watched the video.. Just wondering, how with a molt and living on substrate did the shell stay so substrate free?

Glass shell video

Post by rdug1 » Tue Aug 31, 2010 12:04 pm

Did have a bath before filming. But because of the surface of the glass not much sticks to it. I did post another short film on Youtube you might be interested in also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDjuvJQH ... re=channel

I'm really interested in seeing an actual shell change into a glass shell.

Has anyone tried these out and had a crab move in yet?
Or how are they surviving in your tanks?

I might by one and throw it in there just to see what would happen, but I think that'd be just for my entertainment. The back end of a crab still freaks me out a bit, I don't know if I'd want to see it all the time.

I'm also with the crowd that's concerned about light getting in.
But as long as people are giving crabs a fair choice between a glass shell and a natural shell, I don't see it as a bad thing ^_^

It's a great alternative to painted shells :D
I wish there was a way to market the shells to the mass market!

Someone needs to come up with some high end hermit crab boutique XD

I must say, this really creeps me out. If you think they are cool go for it but, I would never want them in my home, I really really don't want to see crab soft bits when I don't have to.

I posted an article awhile back about how cool these would be for crab research, but in my house they get a huge eeewwwww.

Beautiful glass work though. I was thinking of getting some for decoration OUTSIDE the tank.

Granted at this time most of the animals in that enclosure are in shells they like and they have not moved for the glass or other natural shells so I don't know if it is the shells or their feeling of the need to not to re-shell. They are beautiful and seem quite strong, easily as strong as some of the natural shells we offer to our crabs.

Someone asked about herms switching into them and I gave them your response to when I asked a similar question... I would have bought a couple of these shells by now if shipping wasn't so expensive to me. Interesting looking.

Ahhh - I thought you might have hit the send button too fast - having done that myself a few times.
