Help identifying shell

Post by cHorse » Sat Oct 18, 2014 10:12 am

Hi guys!

I've been sneakin' around here a couple of months now, cause I'm planning on getting hermits in a couple weeks/months. I have learned a lot about hermits thanks to you all! You will probably see a lot more from me later, when I'm setting up my crabitat.

I could'nt stop myself from buying some cheap shells I found, without even knowing if my future hermits will use them (they will be nice as decoration anyway). Maybe someone here can tell me if they are preferred by hermits and what the latin/english name is? They are very light, and as you can see in the pictures they vary a lot in color.

I hope the images works, don't really know how this page works yet.

Buccinum undatum, known as the Common Whelk. These are an eating species, especially in Europe. It's only found in the seas around the UK and into Northern Europe, so it's definitely not a native shell for any hermit crab species. We had someone post about these before, and to my surprise the crabs were wearing them! We had someone else take one home from a restaurant, and it got worn as well.

Thank you for the answer Wode! Really interesting, I had no idea they are common here in my country (Sweden). Will be interesting to see if they will be worn :) Though i guess brevimanus, which i will probably get, will prefer turbos.
