I got a gift a shell someone got while vacationing at the beach. It's one of the shells you buy at the store and it has little spikes sticking out. Kind of reminds me of like a blowfish. It has a perfect size opening for one of my crabs. Sorry I don't know how to put up pic from my phone. If anyone knows what I'm talking about is it ok?

It's kind of like that. Some of the spikes come off shell by an inch. I think it's meant more decorative than anything. Once again sorry no pic

Definitely meant to be decorative if the spines are that long, but it's most likely the same species or another closely related murex. Like all shells, it should be boiled first before being offered. If they can't move around easily they probably won't be interested in it, but it wouldn't harm them to at least give them the chance to check it out. If anything, it sounds like it would make a great tank decoration!
