Re: Biggest shell opening?
To be honest it depends on the species for example indos would take up about 4 inches however ruggies may only take up half that . If you raise a pp to full size however, 3inches is about right

When I was a teenager a pet store we went to had a hermit crab that was the size of a cantaloupe. It was huge. It wasn't for sale though.
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Haha yeah I'm trying to figure out if the person telling me about it is being honest or if they're maybe exaggerating a little! ;pCrabMater wrote:Couldnt imagine a 3" opening PP! What a bruiser!

Do you think it could've been an indo? or a marine crab?GotButterflies wrote:When I was a teenager a pet store we went to had a hermit crab that was the size of a cantaloupe. It was huge. It wasn't for sale though.

I remember it being colorful. It was a land crab.
Edit: by being colorful - like it was just caught. I'm sure it wasn't that vibrant in captivity.

Beautiful crab! I recently gave a jumbo to a friend - he was about that big..if not bigger! We named him Goliath. I found him at a shell shop. Couldn't bear to see him be purchased to go in a horrid kk.

Yeah it's really horrible to see a creature that has lived that long and grow so big slowly die. I remember one time this guy stated in a shell for soooo long and eventually he wore a hole in it and had to leave

123AE. ... oh my gosh, he gorgeous!
I seriously hope I can get all my crew to that size. My partner has no idea how much we're going to spend on shells yet.![](//cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/3.1/png/64/1f609.png)

I figure, my crabs will never need shots, see the vet, need licenses, medicines, or vaccinations, or surgery for escaping the fence and getting hit by a car, no fence reinforcement bills, and no second dr bill for replacing the cast she tore herself out of to burrow under the fence again after the first reinforcement effort was completed, no obedience school training, etc. Some of my family's dogs have not been very bright.
I think I could come up with a really great cost/benefit analysis

Re: Biggest shell opening?
This is my biggest guy, Hermie (named by the 5 year old who wanted me to take him as he realized he was scared of him)
His shell opening is 2 1/4". I honestly always thought that PPs maxed out at 2 1/4" or 2 1/2". I'm asking as someone recently told me they have a crab with a 3" opening or bigger and I am very skeptical lol
