Shells in graduating sizes

Post by crabby33 » Wed Aug 30, 2017 7:30 pm

If I have a crab in a shell with 7/8 opening, how do I arrange the shells in the 3-5 shells per crab recommendation?

What do mean by arrange them?

You just get some shells with the same size and slightly larger openings and put them in the tank.

PP's prefer turbos usually.

Just get a few 1" and maybe one or two 1.25" turbos and put them in the tank. You can use a plastic shower caddy as a "shell shop" or a net or a small bowl, or put them wherever.

I definitely recommend that you make a shell shop :)

Keeping the shells on a second level off of the sand will keep them cleaner and less likely to be buried :) I have all my shell shops made out of plastic baskets. On the outside of the baskets I decorated them with plastic plants. Then inside of the basket I put cocofiber matting on the bottom of the basket. Then I start with one layer of shells. Then, I add a shell here and there. Eventually the shell shop gets full, and I take them all out, and start with a new batch of shells. I have a lot! :)

Finding shells seems to be really hard for me here in Massachusettes. Theres a definite learning curve to online shell shopping. I have probably 30 shells that do me zero good for a while still, and only 10 or 11 my guys use to "window shop" frequently. Shells are ny kryptonite right now....

The problem with crabs is that's it's hard to know what they'll want. Some will stay at 7/8, some will go to 1 inch, others will jump right to 1 and 1/8. Three to five is a bare minimum, but going with a variety of types in different sizes will give them more choices. They will be fine with less so long as the shells are the right size and types, but if you want to see them changing for sure then giving them more choices is better!

I totally agree with the shell shop baskets! My crabs totally pooped in and buried so many shells when they were on the sub. It's just easier to keep them in shell shops. I have 2 one big guy shell shop in the second level and a lil guy shell shop in a Tupperware down on the sub. They also love to hang out in the second level shell shop all the time it's their favorite "chill spot"
