Monster shells?!?

This is where you discuss shells for your hermit crabs. Not for selling/swapping shells, use Classified Ads for that.

Monster shells?!?

Post by Dori1223 » Fri Sep 22, 2017 12:37 am

I've been reading through the shell threads (I'm new here btw) and I am getting a bit anxious. It is seeming more and more that I my "little" colony of 5 hermies may be monsters. They're all in shells with 2" or larger openings. I was searching the threads for ideas on where to find some larger non-painted shells (though at this point I'll take just about any shells.) Now I'm worried that I may not be able to find adequate shells for my babies. Does anyone else have larger hermies here?

Hello :) Then it sounds like you would have jumbos :)

You can find large shells on Ebay, Etsy, or under some of the sellers on the HCA Shopping Resources page. :)

I personally recommend that jumbos have a crabitat minimum of 75 gallons.

I have jumbos myself :)
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Not to worry, when you know exactly where to look, finding shells for them isn't too difficult. :) they do cost more: on average $7-15 each though.

I'd recommend the seller MyGANN (found on Amazon and Etsy, also has their own website too but isn't as helpful as their Amazon/Etsy listings) and Richard's Seashells (is its own entity with a website) for the larger shells. Richard's is cheaper but MyGANN has bigger shells. Both sellers list the shell size openings but you can also contact them if you want to be 100% sure. You're basically looking for jade turbos (and they come in many different carved or not carved varieties), black murexes, and you can even try pink murexes. Pink murexes top out usually around 1.5" opening but my jumbos, even though they pick 2" opening turbos, will sometimes wear the smaller murexes for whatever weird crabby reasons they have lol.

How big is your tank though? Like what GB said, 5 jumbos will need a lot of room!

Although, to be honest, I just looked at the pictures you posted of your guys and, in my opinion, you might be measuring wrong. If they're not even tennis ball sized yet, they probably don't need 2" opening shells. A 2" opening shell is quite massive. The following are pics of a currently unused jade turbo with a 2" opening I have in my tank.
