Fusi shell question

Post by crabby33 » Tue Jan 30, 2018 5:39 pm

Is it possible my crab Timon was forced into the Fusi shell I bought him in at PetSmart three and a half years ago? Fusi shells come from the Western Atlantic and Timon is a purple pincher. He was very tiny when I bought him and thank goodness he's now in a turbo. But it has given me pause for thought and made me wonder if he had been forced into that shell. Since those shells are not native to our shores.

While I'm pretty deeply not a shell person, I believe there are fusi species well south in the western atlantic, in the Gulf of Mexico & into the west indies (even south america), which is PP territory. Certainly Cittarium picas are more popular, but fusi would be a less desirable alternative.

Turbos, while preffered, aren't native shells for PPs. They like 'em, but these aren't the pants they're sporting in their native range. :)

Edit: and I think it's mostly painted shells that crabs are forced into - there's no real economic reason to waste time forcing crabs into unpainted shells. If the shell was painted, then yes, the crab was forced.... if not, then no.

Thanks LJJ. I've actually seen Timon looking at the picas I have. Also, I did receive a bag of shells for Christmas but the turbos that were in the mix were either broken or too small. It also had a bunch of Trochus shells but I'm not offering those. They're under the avoid list in the shell guide.
