Just curious, but with the amount of actual science used in crab keeping, why don't we use mm or cm in shell measurement? Like I said, just curious!

Because, As cited by Sheldon Cooper (big bang theory) Americans clearly cannot handle the metric system!

Hey, at least we are using actual measurement units! Anyone else also on a Facebook group where a banana is always used for scale??

Re: Why not metric?
Shells for hermit crabs is a secondary market for sellers who provide them mainly for collectors, crafting and decor. They aren't going to be scientific about it because they don't really care all too much, aside from being able to sell more product. A basic set of calipers for measuring is made for general pipe fitting, which is also sold by inches. If it was something that was started for hermits and used niche tools just for hermits then mm definitely makes more sense, although openings never have to be that exact either!
