Ash trees
Ash trees
I have an ash tree in my backyard and one of its branches broke off in a wind storm last night. The safe foods says that ash wood is fine, but I found nothing on the other parts (leaves). I think they would love it if they got their claws on it, but I know some parts of mostly edible things aren't edible too. It's a 5' branch about the diameter of a quarter with tons of leaves and I'd hate it to otherwise go to waste.

Re: Ash trees
The only toxicity concern that I found on Ash is for skin contact (on humans). I think that I decided against doing a food trial on it because the leaves don't have much bug damage (which is often an indicator of whether it would be suitable for crabs). If you try it, let me know the outcome and I will post your findings on my research blog.

Re: Ash trees
I don't use my crabs as test subjects, I care too much about them. If they were in their natural environment and came across it themselves, that would be a different story, but these little guys rely on me for everything.
I think I'll pass just in case it is going to be bad for them. But I have never had any irritation from ash trees and the leaf cutter bees and sphinx moth caterpillars love it! Maybe someone else is willing to try it and if so, I'm hoping it goes over better than worse.

You can always check out the Safe Food List if you are unsure. It's in the Crab Care, Food and Water subforum.Lokalai wrote:I don't use my crabs as test subjects, I care too much about them. Re: Ash trees
The question was "are the leaves safe," since the Safe List only specifies that the wood is. Usually when the list is that specific it's because there's something about the rest of the plant that hints at it maybe being unsafe or because we just don't know.soilentgringa wrote: You can always check out the Safe Food List if you are unsure. Thanks Calla! Sorry for not catching that.CallaLily wrote:The question was "are the leaves safe," since the Safe List only specifies that the wood is. Re: Ash trees
I definitely think I'm just going to avoid it until more input can be gathered from others that may try it. Thank you anyways!
