Leaving food in tank all the time?

Post by karlsisocoolike » Tue Jul 05, 2016 5:07 pm

Should I be leaving their food in their tank all the time (changing it out of course) or should I be feeding them at a set time? My hermits eat but they don't ever "charge" their food. Just wanted to know what would be better for them.

It's best to leave a dish of dry foods in the tank 24/7 so they'll have something to eat when ever the urge strikes. You can make a nice homemade dry base mix out of pulverized freeze-dried insects and mealworms, crushed eggshell and plain oats or multigrain uncooked cereal. Fresh foods I usually add to the tank in the evening and remove 12-24 hours later. The introduction of a dish of fresh foods or a half eggshell with raw albumin usually peaks their interest: even if I see no one when I put the dish in, within a few minutes, all the crabs that are above ground will make their way over to see what's been delivered.

I leave their food in for days, since they're scavengers and primarily feed on decaying or rotting organisms in the wild. They enjoy moldy fruit quite a bit; as well as stinky old freeze dried mussels. *vomit*

Sometimes crabs come running to a new dish of food, but generally, they eat on the sneak so you do have to have some food sources in the tank at all times.
