A little confused
So I'm reading, and reading and reading. (looking into cricket breeding, conveniently being side tracked)... On these forums, members feed their crabs dairy product on occasion. Unflavored, live, yogurt, cheese, and even cottage cheese. I've given mine cheese and even offered ricotta, and no one has gotten sick. So where did the myth that dairy was bad for crabs come from?

2 small pp, smeegle (m), shellshock (m); 1 small/medium pp, shelldon (f), 1 medium/large pp, Godzilla (m)
1 dog, bender the min pin. And one betta named Henry. I dont know if its a boy or a girl, its still pretty young.

Re: A little confused
I believe there was concern about whether or not hermit crabs could digest it. Try searching the archives to see if anything was saved about it.
I'm pretty certain dairy has been on the safe list (as a treat) since I joined back in 2008. My crabs do love the occasional bit of cheese.

Yes, there was concern since it wasn't naturally occurring in their diets that it could be harmful. Busting that myth was what put Julia Crab on the map, if I remember correctly.

I don't think it's bad for them once in a while, as long as it's not super processed. Like give them a crumb of a really good cheese, not the plastic American slices.

Sadly, this myth has been resurrected again in certain circles, but the trial was completed and reported on Jan 1, 2006. Dairy is beneficial because of the calcium and protein (casein). It is unlikely that hermit crabs would ever encounter milk and cheese in their natural, unpolluted environment. However, they are scavengers and make use of things no other creature could touch. In fact, most of what you're feeding them in captivity is NOT something they'd find in their native environment. Did you link the Julia Crab article to them as well?Jedi Sena wrote:Sadly, this myth has been resurrected again in certain circles, but the trial was completed and reported on Jan 1, 2006.
