Food recommendation while on Vacation
Food recommendation while on Vacation
Hello,
I am leaving for a week's vacation in a few weeks and I currently have 2 molters down. Judging by when they went down it is possible they may come back up while I am away. I won't have anyone to check on them while we are away, so I plan on giving them a decent supply of food before I leave.
I plan on buying something premixed from one of the recommended vendors. Can anyone recommend any specific kinds?
thank you
Brian

I would just recommend leaf litter (oak, maple, almond - if you have it), bark, twigs from oak, maple. Throw some chia seeds in the tank. Crack some acorns. They will munch on cork bark and moss if you have it too. As far as dry food, you can leave a few different options for them. Basic Diet / Minerals from The Hermit Crab Patch is always good. You can always pick up organic worm castings from your local nursery too. They will be fine.
Especially if you have "bubblers" in their pools
Have a great vacation! Just don't leave any moist food out.

Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

I had one come up while I was on vacation once. In addition to GotButterflies suggestions, I left powdered versions of good post-molt foods: powdered peanut butter, granulated honey (got at my tea shop), and lots of crushed cuttlebone. My guys practically inhale crushed cuttlebone when they come up from a molt!

I have my cuttlebone sticking in my substrate like a surfboard 24/7. Crabs always have that to munch on

I have a bit of leaf litter already, but I think the pin oak tree in my yard is still holding some leaves, so I will add fresh. I just ordered the basic mix and mineral mix from THCP. I look into the worm castings. I think I'll get a bag of dried fruit from the healthfood store and leave a bowl of that. I don't have bubbles, but I don't find my water to foul that quickly and my humidity is pretty constant, I'll just give it a good mist before I leave.

I have a fairly chewed up cuttlebone already in there. Maybe I'll give them a fresh one and bake and powder the old one.GotButterflies wrote:I have my cuttlebone sticking in my substrate like a surfboard 24/7. Crabs always have that to munch on

I'm late to the party, but wanted to add that fish skin jerky, sold as dog chews at, like, fancy holistic petshops (or online) do not mould readily, and my crabs are ALL OVER these things. I'vd been getting Snack 21 brand treats - they're from BC Cananada, but I'm sure there are other kinds.
( I aim for treats that don't make long trans-atlantic/pacific freighter hauls (I. E. Are caught closer to the shores where processed & packaged) in the hopes of avoiding the adition of that ethoxyquin stoof, which I've recently read is used to treat long-haul fish to keep the oils from spontaneous combustion at sea - haven't looked into verifying it yet, but til I do, seems like a good idea to try to buy north American fisheries products if possible...?)
Anyway, having more-or-less hijacked the thread, I'd just like to point out that, while dangerous & highly undesirable, spontaneous cumbustion is still one of the coolest things ever.

It seems ethoxyquin isn't found in wild caught, so if the fish skins are wild caught they should be OK. I have seen the fish jerky before, but it's a pretty big package for 3 crabs. I do give them some freeze dried 1 ingredient cat treats which come in smaller packs. My cats don't seem to mind sharing the little bit they eat. In a humid tank they still get pretty funky of not cleaned out every day.LadyJinglyJones wrote:I'm late to the party, but wanted to add that fish skin jerky, sold as dog chews at, like, fancy holistic petshops (or online) do not mould readily, and my crabs are ALL OVER these things.
