Overdoing on mealworms?

Post by kfinnz » Fri Mar 24, 2017 4:21 pm

So I was wondering if it's possible to be giving a crab TOO much of mealworms. I was reviewing what I feed mine the other day and I noticed that I have mealworm in A LOT of things. I give them a basic diet mix that has mealworm larvae, a dirt supplement that has worm casings, and then I smash up some dried mealworms to add in each night too. They get a good amount of other things as well (a mix with things like bloodworm and mushrooms, coconut and burning bush, etc etc) but with mealworms (and mealworm parts) being such a huge part is that too much of a balance tip in the diet? Concern is just the amount not making the diet varied enough (if that makes sense, not sure how else to word this heh).

I mean, add some fruits and veg or leaf litter in with all the proteins, or some grains like chia, ground flax, oats, millet, etc.

But you aren't overdosing them on mealworms.

Yeah I give them a little of whatever veg we have with dinner and same with fruit! Haven't tried much of the grains I'll look into those! I have a lot of chia seed and flax seed on hand anyways! :)

Thanks!

Are you sure that the veggies are not seasoned AT ALL? They cannot have anything on it.

There are many herbs that are safe for crabs-just to throw that out there. Pepper will not harm them.

Table salt (iodized or not) is said to be unsafe because of anticaking agents, but sea salt that has no additives is not harmful to the crabs.

You wouldn't give them anything seasoned with garlic or onion, though.

No no I take some of the veg off BEFORE I cook it so there's nothing on them. Nor do they get anything that comes from precooked/presealed up things that could possibly have salt and such on them.
So like if we are going to eat kale I pull some off and set it to the side to shred up and feed them that night :)

I make sure to keep an eye on the safe food list here too when picking what to feed them
