What kind of meats are good for them?

Post by doth » Wed Jul 19, 2017 11:11 am

Hi all! I'm planning on getting crabbies soon and want to make sure I have a solid plan for what to feed them....I know I can obtain fresh fruits & veggies for them and I already have organic honey at home, but I'm still a little uncertain on what meats I can feed them.

I'm vegetarian so I'm clueless on this subject and don't currently have meat or fish in the house, but I know protein is important for them and plus I work in a deli and can get meat at a discount :) It would be very easy for me to bring home a small portion of meat after work for a crabby dinner!

I saw chicken and turkey on the safe foods list, & saw that pork is okay but ham isn't good (I assume it's too salty??). Are deli meats acceptable or are they too processed? I'm sure I can get meat off the bone if deli meat is not okay. Do they prefer raw or cooked meat? I'd rather not put meat in my frying pan, but maybe I could get a separate small pan to use just for them. However, if I can buy it cooked (or feed it raw) that would be preferable.

I also have seen that people feed them shrimp, and I know I can get frozen shrimp easily. Should I cook them or just thaw and feed them raw?

There is so much to consider, lol. I am happy to do some trial and error as far as what they like but don't want to feed them anything that would be bad for them!

Thanks!

I give freeze dried, single ingredient cat treats. There are several brands. I mainly use Ultra limited and Pure Bites. They come in a variety of meat and fish flavors. Chicken liver, chicken breast, duck liver, beef, salmon, whitefish, etc. The pieces crush easily into fine poweder between your fingers, though the step probably isn't necessary.

Read the labels carefully to make sure they are single ingredient, just the meat source and nothing else. These brands tend to be organic as well.

You won't find these at the grocery store or the big box pet stores. You'll need to find a smaller independent pet store. I've also seen them at healthfood stores that carry pet food. They come as dog treats too, but that is usually a larger bag.

My cats love them too.

Think of what they would be getting naturally - all kinds of insects in the rotting fruit they're eating, seafood like shrimp and fish, maybe the occasional dead bird. You do not have to branch into other proteins if the thought bothers you, although doing so could help fill in nutritional gaps they may be experiencing in captivity. (Dry and frozen food, and even fresh that has gone through shipping and sitting on shelves, will not have the same amount of nutrition that fresh in the wild has.) All of these things can be bought freeze dried or frozen from the pet store. They are sold as fish food and reptile treats, just make sure to check the ingrediants to make sure nothing is added. You might see the occational vitamin which is fine, especially E (aka mixed tocopherol) which is used as a natural and safe preservative.

You could also serve cooked shrimp tail! I have a one-egg fry pan I bought just for them. We do eat meat, but they can't have all the spices I season ours with so I got the cute little one egg pan. :)
