Some questions about food

Post by Salmon78 » Sun Jul 23, 2017 1:13 pm

I'm a new hermit crab owner and despite my research efforts I'm still a bit confused about a few thing
My first question is: my hermit crab ate some pellet food that contains copper sulfate and eq (before I realized it was harmful) because he ate this once will that affect his health?
Second question: I noticed that the mineral blocks I got didn't have any dyes or preservatives but it did contain copper sulfate, should I throw them out or is it alright?
Third: can they eat dehydrated food? I have a dehydrator so I thought that dehydrated fruit would be good because it would last longer than normal fruit but I couldn't really find any information on it.
That's all the questions I can think of right now.

Hello! Don't beat yourself up about it. Just because he ate it once, it probably won't affect his health. Those ingredients are not safe for hermit crabs. If it were me, I personally would take the items (pellets and mineral blocks) back to the store and ask for a refund ;)

Yes, they can eat dehydrated food! :) As long as the item is off of the safe list, you are fine. Try to buy organic if possible. Hermit crabs are sensitive to pesticides and fertilizers. :)

Thanks for responding so quickly!!!
Sadly I can't return the food because I bought it in a starter kit in a store that I don't have in my local area, oh well.
And ok that will make it a lot easier to feed him!

I second GB!
I also try to find good, organic trail mixes that have safe foods in them. My local Aldi carries plenty of choices for that!

Thanks again both of you have some really great advice
Quick question: can you give hermit crabs both raw and cooked eggs? And what type of cooked eggs (scrambled, boiled, etc)?
And giner13 it's really cool that you feed your hermit crabs trail mix

I've ever given them eggs. But they love the egg shells!

I've seen some other people give their crabbies scrambled, unseasoned eggs.

I feed my crabs only stuff from the safe list. I've fed mine sweet potatoes and carrots before for beta carotene. One of my crabs I've only had for about six months, so when he came up from his molt in February, I got him started on foods high in beta carotene to enhance his color. Right now, he's due for another molt, so I'm starting him on a high protein diet.

Mine love eggs! :)

I don't give them raw. I do give them egg shells, (whole - unrinsed). Then I scramble the egg, cook it and they love it! I also have given boiled. Both are an absolute hit :) No seasoning or butter. :)

Cool! The reason I asked was I saw on one of safe food list something about egg whites/yolks and I don't know much about cooking.
So another question: I saw on the safe foods list pork but it said no ham, does ham contain a seasoning that's harmful to them or is it the way it's cooked?
And thanks for putting up with my endless questions.

There are a few bags of like dried blue berries, bananas. I think one time I found a bag of flaked coconut. Stuff like that that really has only that in the ingredient list! There's also good Chia & Flax seed there as well that my guys like.

Mine won't touch it? they don't seem to like the in between size... they want a powder or chunky bits they can rip apart.. I always thought the flax seed was hard for them to pick up but if yours eat them I'm thinking maybe I found the one food they won't eat! Hahahaha
