Dried Insects Smell Off

Post by DUDE » Fri Nov 27, 2020 11:38 am

So I bought some dried crickets and grasshoppers for my crabs a while back and I noticed today that they have been emitting a very sharp, almost pesticide like smell? The same thing used to happen to tubifex worm cubes I would buy for my fish. Is this normal or something to be concerned about? (I don't think the insects have come into any contact with moisture as I take care not to touch them and pour them out directly from the bag) Any help is appreciated:)

Was it any particular brand you have? Are there any added ingredients? Is there an expiration date on the container? Do you see any type of mold or anything that looks odd?

It's a locally produced brand though the worms were from Hikari. No added ingredients and it has not reached its expiration date. No mold but the insects are covered in more powder that I assume is the result of some insects being crushed

I have some dried insects that seem fine after a year but my little container of dried bloodworms got invaded by some kind of tiny Caterpillars. They move extremely slow and are smaller than a grain of rice. They seem to be eating the blood worms and breaking them down into almost a powder. I don’t know what kind of bug it is I don’t know if it’s a larva and it will pupate or not but maybe there is something in your insect container chowing down?
