What kinds of salts are okay for hermies?
What kinds of salts are okay for hermies?
Hi! So I often make shiozake (salted salmon) for my family at home and was wondering if it would be okay to make a hermit crab version? Normally shiozake calls for coating it in saké (neutralizes fishy smell) and then liberally sprinkling with salt and keeping it in the fridge a couple days. I would obviously skip the saké step for my hermie though. I will also probably broil the salmon in the oven because that's one of the ways to cook shiozake that doesn't involve oils or anything else. I've been struggling getting protein my crab will eat so I thought this might be a good way to try something new.
Oh, I also was reading online and some said to stay away from table salt because iodized salt can be bad for them. I do have Himalayan salt and I could easily get sea salt from the store what do you guys think?

Hi!
Sea salt is on the safe food list, so if you added that to the salmon, that would be ok. Or you could just try giving them some salmon plain (no butter, oils, etc) to see if they like it that way.
My crabs aren't much for fresh foods, but love eggs! They enjoy scrambled eggs and the yolks from hard boiled eggs. I usually just crack an egg or two and scramble it up in a microwave safe mug or bowl, and heat it for 1-2 mins. Voila! Scrambled eggs! Lol I'm way too lazy to get out a pan and make them on the stove haha.

You don’t need to skip the saké if you’re cooking it since you’ll cook out the alcohol.
Table salt is controversial since we don’t know how safe it is for them. Iodine is an essential nutrient but we don’t know how much they need or if table salt has too much. Anti-caking agents are a whole other ball game, but all in all I’m usually not too worried.
If table salt isn’t your fancy than Himalayan, sea, kosher, or any other food-grade salt will do.
Oils also aren’t necessarily harmful.

I forgot some oils are ok. Maybe olive oil would entice the crabbies.JoeHermits wrote:You don’t need to skip the saké if you’re cooking it since you’ll cook out the alcohol.

Even not cooked off, I have doubts that very small amounts of alcohol would be harmful. Fermented fruits are a natural occurrence! Mine always seemed to like the funky winey apples the best.

I’d forgotten about fermented fruits! I’ve seen firsthand how intoxicated they can make insects.
Wonder how the crab would take to Merlot

A little Merlot and the wheel could be a fun combination, lol!
